Chennai Factory Owner Arrested Over Methanol Tragedy That killed 21

Drinking methanol led to the dying of 21 individuals thus far in Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts.

Tamil Nadu Police have arrested a Chennai-based manufacturing facility proprietor for allegedly promoting methanol, consumption of which value 21 individuals their lives. Altogether, 16 individuals — together with the manufacturing facility proprietor, two individuals who purchased the methanol from him and people who helped transport it — have been arrested and accused of homicide.

State police chief Dr Sylendra Babu mentioned the crackdown on illicit liquor within the state is driving individuals to ingesting industrial methanol. “People are going for methanol solely as a result of illicit liquor has been checked,” he mentioned.

In an announcement, the police chief mentioned Ilayanambi, who owns Jaya Sakthi Private Ltd, had illegally offered 1,200 litres of methanol to 2 males. The methanol was mendacity unused after his manufacturing facility shut down throughout the pandemic.

The two males, in flip, equipped round 8 litres of it to 2 individuals.

It led to the dying of 21 individuals in Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts. At least 30 others are receiving therapy at numerous hospitals.

The Opposition AIADMK and the BJP have slammed the ruling DMK over the problem, calling it “incompetent”.
